    This month's

More news this month! This past weekend Jamie Sadlowski, the 2- time World Long Drive Champion made the cut in a Nationwide Tour Event in the USA (he led the field in driving distance). If he can continue to improve and make more cuts and then make his way to the PGA tour, it would be a new dawn in the game of power.
On the LPGA, Lexi Thompson became the youngest winner ever on the PGA tour. She could mark the new dawn in lady’s golf as she is big and powerful and could usher in a generation of great athletes on the LPGA.

    Old News

from the online magazine Golf.nl a quote from a top-amateur player: "Een term die veel terugkwam in Huizings relaas was 'vrijuit spelen', dat is waar hij het meeste mee bezig is. 'Mijn doel is om de ballen zo vrijuit mogelijk te slaan. De eerste acht holes ging dat goed, maar daarna niet meer. Ook mijn drives moeten beter. Als je ziet hoe zo'n Kaymer de par-5'en normaal gesproken 'killt', dan kan ik daar nog veel terrein winnen.“.
What is our answer here? - use the Tour Tempo Micro Player and you can train to play "free". And with the Speedball you can train to generate speed at impact and kill those par 5's.

    Dutch Open & TTE®

The Dutch Open will be held in Hilversum, The Netherlands from September 8 to 11 inclusive. PGA Holland facilitates various spectator activities in the Sports Plaza area during the four days. You can have your tempo checked and adjusted to what it should be; tour tempo!

PGA Championship Lesson Learned About Golf Swing Tempo

Interesting lesson to be learned from the PGA Championship - the last major of this year. Everyone has always thought that if you are kind of slow moving/laid back, you will have a slow tempo. Conversely, if you are type A and upbeat, you will have an upbeat tempo…….BUT
Laid back, 'one step above a coma' (words by David Feherty’s of CBS Sports) describe Jason Dufner….His tempo? Probably the fastest on tour with a backswing of only 16-18 frames. He swings @ 18/6. That is super fast. Just listen to it. You can barely blink and Jason Dufner hits a shot in that time frame.
Upbeat, excitable Keegan Bradley…..his tempo? Fairly slow @ 24/8. This is a little more doable…..

The beauty of Tour Tempo is that it doesn’t matter your swing style OR YOUR PERSONALITY, or if you’re tall or short or just about anything else. It doesn’t change from day to day. The tones are always the same. When you use them you get back in sync with the rhythm of the pros and you hit better shots.
    Period.

Tempo update from the Barclays (PGA Tour)

Dustin Johnson’s tempo was 23/8 on the driver and 25/9 on the irons. So, he would fit right in @ 24/8 with great tempo. He was very consistent in his tempo and this (along with his athleticism) was the key to long and straight shots.
What was cool about that last group was that you couldn’t get a more different swing (compared to DJ) than Matt Kuchar. His arms are lower than his head at the top, while DJ’s left arm looks like it’s close to the rim (basketball). What do they have in common? Tempo! Kuchar’s tempo was….drum roll….the same as DJ’s – 24/8. His irons were a frame or so faster, but still fall into 24/8.
So, the moral of the story, you can swing the flattest one plane swing (Kuchar) or the most upright 2 plane swing (Johnson)....... BUT you have to have Tour Tempo as part of the equation.

    Three components of tour tempo:
    a. 3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing on full shots
    b. Elapsed time from takeaway to impact is fast (most tour pro’s get to impact in about 1 second). Johnson and Kuchar get to impact in 1.06 sec
    c. Consistent in your tempos (this is where Tiger Woods is light-years away from where he used to be)

Question on Length of Swing in the Y and L drills

“I do have one question. In the drills, the follow-thru is shorter than the swing. It seems like you would need to decelerate to do this, I’m sure there is some reason to try do this? I would add I have trouble doing this, do you 1- stop the turn and stiffen the arms? What is the purpose to not going to full finish or at least completing the equivalent turn to the take-away?”

That is a great question and no one has really asked us that. And your idea that you would have to decelerate makes sense, but this is one of those counter intuitive things (there are a lot of them in golf). So, here goes with the reasoning:

Length of swing: One of the main reasons we like to control the follow thru is that it gives you the golfer a huge feedback mechanism. For example, let’s say you want to know if you’re ‘flipping’. If you do a full or even semi-full follow thru, you don’t even feedback as to whether or not you flipped. BUT, if you stop the club past impact, you can really see and feel if your right hand is flipped (flexion). Another great part of this is you can see the direction of the club and also the face. So there are many variables that you get to see and feel by stopping the follow thru. These are never seen and felt in a full follow thru.

Decelerate: This one is tricky, but what we are trying to get you to do with the short follow thru is to accelerate into impact and then decel AFTER impact. The mistake everyone makes is swinging very hard into the ball and then trying to really put on the brakes TOO HARD. You don’t have to kill it. If you can’t decelerate into a solid finish, then you don’t have good ‘control’ of the body or the club, so this really helps to give you that control. Another point on the decel: if you start at the top of the downswing and gradually build up swing (like a pendulum), then you won’t decel into the ball.

One other point: the big mistake golfers make on the Y and L drills is that they do a full swing at about 50% speed. I say, “ok, do a Y drill”. Then they proceed to take the club back to parallel and try to swing easy. This is an awareness thing. A huge difference between a tour pro and an amateur is awareness. When you have the awareness to tell yourself ‘Y drill’ and then you look into the mirror and see the Y drill, that is when you will really improve your swing. (courtesy John Novosel Jr.)

    Tour Tempo Europe® Newsletter

    2 August 2011

    This month's

In this month's newsletter you find a new drill which can best be done with our Power Tools® club, we introduce you to Jason Eslinger, a leading pro from the USA Longdrive Tour and a quote from the book on casting, or rather why to get rid of casting. When you have ideas or questions you want to have dealt with send them to us at golf@tourtempo.eu

    Reverse Grip Drill

Can be used with all the Drills to give you the correct feelings of connection in the swing. We feel that this is one of the best things you can do with the Power Tools®

    Jason Eslinger - Longdrive Champion

"I always travel with my Tour Tempo Micro Player in my bag to make sure my tempo is solid all day." Jason Eslinger - 2010 Leading Money Winner on the LDA Tour.

    From the Book

This month we pick a section on casting from Appendix B of the book by John Novosel Sr. and John Garrity

"The most common cause of casting, I'm convinced, is improper tempo. (Casting is the logical consequence of taking the club back too slowly)."

and further on: "So let's be clear about casting and your golfswing. You can actually play pretty good golf while casting."...... "On the other hand there are four good reasons why you should go all-out to rid yourself of this habit. (red: because of varying clubheadspeed, good holes destroyed by blow-up holes, you'll never be able to take your range swing to the course and you never hit the ball as far as you should - no it will get worse over time and age). "Proper tempo is not something to worry about next week or next year or whenever you think you'll be finished working on your swing. Tour Tempo is a fundamental."

    Short News

Tempo and rithm of the golf swing are not the same. So we are glad that Sport1 of The Netherlands referred to Tour Tempo last week as a good source of information on tempo. You can send us your questions and remarks or testimonials via email to me: Oscar at TTE®.

The newsletters are published also on .......Newsletter Page. So if you have missed your email, look regularly on this page of the TTE® website or look back to newsletters in the Archive.

    In Between

    by John Novosel Jr

Fredrik Jacobson’s tempo in last week USA PGA Tour’s Travellers Championship was a 3:1 ratio, he was right in between 27/9 and 24/8 (Ryan Moore was between 27/9 and 30/10). They were both displaying the 2:1 ratio in their putting tempo.

Similarly Yani Tseng (winner on last week’s LPGA Major) was 3:1 while she was in between 21/7 and 24/8.

The lesson to be learned here is that you have not to be exactly 24/8, you can be 23/8 or 22/7. You just need to be around 3:1 and you need to be consistent. The main thing you will have to do is figure out which tones to use. Normally, if you are in between tones, you end up listening to the faster tones (because reaction time is built in), but you need to experiment and see what works for you.

On the 13th tee shot in the 3rd round amateur Patrick Cantlay’s shot in the water was 33:7 - almost 5:1!! Chamblee commented on TV that Cantlay was real quick from the top. So he was real slow, then real quick. This is the worst combination of all and what most amateurs do in their swings. Then after a swing like this, the advice will be, “you need to slow down”……the problem is that they slow down the backswing, when they really need to SPEED up the backswing and actually slow down on the downswing. This is why Tour Tempo is so great, it is the same day in and day out, so you can count on it. You cannot count on the thought ‘slow’ or ‘smooth’ or whatever.

    Magazine Quote

(Golfweekly NL)

How to forget about thinking technique? In the last newsletter we mentioned the tip on the preshot routine. Firstly, get yourself a pre-shot routine. This helps you forget about technique. Secondly practise with the tour tempo tones and what happens - you focus but NOT on your technique; set the club at the first tone, place your feet at the 2nd and 3rd tone, waggle on the 2nd set of tones, and swing on the 3rd set of tones. You find the combination of Tones and shot routine on your Micro Player DVD.

    Golf tip on putting

What do world-class putters well? 1) They move the putter head with a constant speed at impact. 2) The total time of the putting stroke is relatively insensitive to the length of the putt. 3) The ratio of the duration of the backswing to the duration of the downswing during the putt is two.

See our TOUR TEMPO® study material Page and click on “Resonance in Putting” the article by Robert Grober. Quite a bit of maths (so back to the old schoolbooks for me), but good info backing up your training with the Putting Tones.

    27 March 2011

    Tour Tempo in The Netherlands

Tour Tempo® co-inventor John Novosel Jr. has been to The Netherlands to present at the annual PGA Holland Seminar. It has been a great success due to John's way of presenting research work and data from golf in combination with a practical approach how to use this knowledge in training Tour Tempo. Here are some pictures from the PGA Holland Seminar held in Naarden on March 14.

John Jr.'s presentation of in total 2-1/2 hours covered the discovery of tour tempo and the tempo's of the some of the best players in the world. Also how to use the tour tempo method in real life when you want to teach tour tempo to golf students. The second part of his presentation dealt with speed and power of the golf swing. What is it and how can you train it. John Jr had some recent results on putting with him. More to come on this in future newsletters. John, many thanks for your efforts!

    Some of the best tempos?

John Jr. sent me this picture taken from American TV (the Tavistock Cup) after he returned from the PGA Holland seminar to the USA. In fact during the PGA Holland seminar the audience asked on Tiger Woods' tempo of recent. And you can read more about Tiger's form from this article in the Dutch Golfweekly .........Golfweekly of 3 March 2011

When you record Tiger's tempo he is typically 20 frames in he backswing and a fast 6 frames in the downswing. He used to have excellent 21/7 tempo and be very consistent. So he is off the 3-to-1-ratio of backswing to downswing. The answer to the PGA Holland audience was in fact let Tiger train his tempo and go to the 21/7.

    Golf-tip for the Month

This tip of the month comes from the presentation given at the PGA Holland seminar. How does tour tempo help your pre-shot routine? First, get yourself a preshot routine if you haven't got one. You can practise with the tones and your micro player on. The first set of three tones you use to put the club behind the ball, and set your feet aligned. The second set you waggle and loosen up. Then on the third set you swing. You now have a solid and fast routine and this stops the thinking

Also get yourself a trigger. What is this? A trigger is the starting movement of your swing, so a starter reacting to the first of the three tones. A very common trigger is the forward press by the hands but there a dozen others. Why would you need one? Because it keeps you moving instead of freezing up over your swing.

    From the Book

Here is a scoop. John Novosel Sr. and John Garrity are working on a new book Tour Tempo 2 - The short game and beyond.

    Teamwork and Good Mindset

from the World Golf Fitness Summit

Neale Smith, Craig Davies and Sean Foley are the mental, physical and golf coaches for USA PGA-tour player Hunter Mahan. Here is a great little talk about mindset on the golf course.

Smith was caddying for Hunter in a 36 hole US Open Qualifier and Hunter had just shot over par and had a bad attitude all day long. So Neale told Hunter, "this mindset is not working, if you want me to caddy another 18, here is what you are going to do:
When you hit a good shot, you’re going to give me a fist pump and say YES!
When you hit a bad shot, you’re going to have no reaction whatsoever."

Hunter reluctantly agreed. They went to the tee to start the 2nd round and Hunter hit his tee shot down the middle of the fairway. He looked back at Neale and did a very sarcastic/soft YES and a wimpy fist pump. He kept up this attitude all day long and when he drained a long putt on the last hole, he shouted YES with an enthusiastic fist pump to shoot 63 and qualify.

More tips later on mindset on the golf course and how it helps (good mindset!) to shoot lower scores.

You may have heard about Peter Kostis as former topcoach (Paul Casey) and Golf commentator? Here at the right with John Novosel Jr.

Peter was one of the keynote speakers at the WGFS and his presentation was excellent. It was titled: the Evolution of the Golf Swing, and he talked about how the swing has changed over the year mainly due to equipment, courses and conditioning. He said there are many ways to hit the ball, the main constant being that you must be able to turn. Along those lines, his quote was, “There is no one swing, but everyone needs one swing”. For teachers, he added that if you teach, you must always be learning and it is better to underteach than overteach.

More to come from WGFS 2010, including John Jr's training with one of the top strength coaches in the world, Al Vermeil,

And other reports and observations from other speakers at the WGFS for your game!

    From the Book

From TT's own version of the "Little Red Book" we still like the following as we experienced recently.

"I let some friends read the Tour Tempo manuscript before publication to make sure it was clear and understandable. a few told me they were already practising Tour Tempo. "I tried swinging faster a few years ago " one said, "and since then I've played much better". Another said he had tried swinging to music, "but I didn't see any improvement, so I stopped". Others hearing me talk about Tour Tempo, say they have already tried it. When I ask what they mean, they say that they have swung to a metronome or the sound of the ocean surf.
Listen folks. Those things may be pleasant. They may even be helpful (by quieting the conscious mind). But until you practice to the Tour Tempo audio tracks, you haven't tried Tour Tempo. The best golfers in the world swing with a specific 3-to-1 tempo, and it has nothing to do with metronomes, the waltz, or tribal chants.
It's more like chemistry. Just as you need two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom to make water, you need three units of backswing to every unit of forward swing to create Tour Tempo.
    Close only counts in horseshoes."

My family and friends offered their advice that this was a fool’s errand, particularly those that played golf. As is my style, I charged ahead with the effort with reckless abandon starting in November of last year. After group lessons, ball banging on the driving range, and playing on courses the nature of the task became starkly clear: I might never get anywhere at this enterprise. Perhaps I was on a fool’s errand.

In an act of desperation, I went for it and bought your book. The result: I just can’t tell you how great it has worked!!! It is totally amazing. 9 iron from 90 to a 125 yards, a 3 wood from 170 to 205. But the biggest surprise is the amazing consistent ball striking. I cannot even believe it but have gone from 20% well hit balls to 90%+.

My God, your program is outstanding!! Can’t say enough about it to my fellow senior citizen novice golfers.

    Bill Heath"

    From the Book

    I notice that tempo and rhythm are mixed occasionally. The book defines these elements as follows;
Tempo is the speed of your swing. Rhythm is the (right) order in which you sequence your swing movements.

Anyway reading the book again from time to time is a valuable source of information.
